Nepal possesses a promising potential for hydroelectric power development, thanks to its abundant water resources and favorable geographical features. In 2001, the Government of Nepal (GoN) introduced a policy that enabled private sector participation in hydropower development. Bikash Hydropower Company Limited (BHCL) emerges as a key player committed to driving the nation's economic growth through harnessing these resources.

The demand for power in Nepal's national electricity grid currently exceeds 1,500 megawatts (MW), while the installed generation capacity during the wet season (June to October) falls short at less than 850 MW. Hydropower plants currently supply around 95% of the country's grid electricity. However, in the dry season (December to April), the generation capacity decreases to less than 400 MW due to reduced river flows, resulting in long hours of load-shedding for consumers. To meet this shortfall, the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has resorted to importing expensive electricity from India. This emphasizes the urgent need for the development of hydropower projects in Nepal.

BHCL understands its vital role in meeting both domestic energy needs and fulfilling the nation's economic aspirations. The company has already made significant strides in this direction. Operating the Upper Machha Khola small hydro power plant, with a capacity of 4.55 MW, BHP supplies electricity to the national grid through a power purchase agreement with the NEA. Located in the Gorkha District, this project has proven its ability to sustain the region's electricity requirements. These endeavors exemplify BHCL's commitment to maximizing investor profitability and utilizing Nepal's natural resources to meet the nation's energy demands.

BHCL attributes its achievements to the unwavering support of its dedicated staff, shareholders, stakeholders, and well-wishers. Their contributions have propelled BHP to the forefront of Nepal's hydropower sector. Looking ahead, the company remains steadfast in its pursuit of sustainable socio-economic development and aims to serve clients not only within Nepal but also beyond its borders.

In conclusion, Bikash Hydropower Company Limited is at the forefront of Nepal's energy landscape, driving the nation towards sustainable development and addressing its pressing energy needs. With a focus on hydropower project development and operation, BHCL is poised to shape a brighter future for Nepal and make a positive impact beyond its borders.
